    Energy management

450 m elevation over 16 km may not seem too much, but most of it must be achieved in three short, steep sections: at the start we ascend 130 m to Újlaki Hill, in the middle 100 m awaits us for Calvary Hill, and shortly before the end comes Hármashatár Hill with 120 m.

    Recommended period

Can be completed at any time of day. Most of the route is characterized by a forested, grove environment.

Our trail running section is supported by Dockyard. The route is recommended by the legendary Csaba Németh, Hungary's most successful active trail runner.

    Author’s recommendation

    • At the Fenyőgyöngye bus stop, there is a blue push fountain, but remember it only operates from spring to autumn!
    • If you have a sports watch suitable for navigation, you can download the track onto it using the above “Download GPX” button, but if you bring a phone with you, you can also navigate directly by opening the run on it.

    Itinerary

    • From Fenyőgyöngye, we run on unmarked paths with the help of navigation until the end of Szépvölgyi út, from where we continue on the S marked trail.
    • After Virágos-nyereg, we switch from the S to the K trail until the next intersection, at which point we turn onto the unmarked path leading over Tök Hill towards Szarvas Hill.
    • After Szarvas Hill, this path continues as S▲. After Calvary Hill, we connect back to the S trail.
    • From the S trail, turning onto the Z trail, we return to Virágos-nyereg.
    • From Virágos-nyereg, we continue on the K trail to the saddle below Hármashatár Hill, then proceed on an unmarked path to the summit.
    • From Hármashatár Hill, we run on an unmarked path to the Z+ trail, follow it to the K trail, and finally descend back to Fenyőgyöngye on this path.

    Detailed description of the route

The first two kilometers of the route proceed on unmarked paths; navigate with the app!

From the Fenyőgyöngye parking lot, we start uphill on a forest road running parallel to the continuation of Szépvölgyi út. At the next stop for bus 65, we turn onto the left uphill road, then at its upper section at the benches and fire pit, turn right. At the next junction, turn left for just a few meters, then right onto an unmarked single-track trail running between the lower Glück Frigyes út and the upper Kecskehegyi út. We run on its soft ground until the wooden cross, the viewpoint above the Kecske-hegyi quarry.

Continuing from here, we descend to the Z↺ trail, turn left, and after 50 m reach an intersection. Here we take the forest road veering diagonally right into the woods - this leads to a parking area, then we continue on a single-track path. We reach the asphalt at the top of Szépvölgyi út, run 200 meters, and near the end, directly after the old border stone, turn straight onto the S trail. This trail first rises gently then more steeply but remains rocky up to the viewpoint offering a beautiful panorama of Határ-nyereg, Homok Hill, and the gliding airfield with János Hill in the background. Slightly higher, we reach Újlaki Hill’s summit and the paragliding launch ramp, from where you can see Vörös-kővár, Hidegkút, Solymár, and slightly to the right the mountain range of the route, ending with Calvary Hill.

Descending from Újlaki Hill, we stay on the S trail. After the sparse upper sections, we enter the forest, where the single-track path broadens into a normal forest road, running all the way to Virágos-nyereg, where we turn right onto the K and S trails, then at the military grave turn left continuing on K. This section first rises gently, then descends similarly. From the comfortable forest path, there are many nice views to the right of Üröm and the entrance to the Vörösvári Basin. Near the end, after a left turn, at the power line pole, the K trail turns right, but we keep running straight for some ten meters, then at the old “Solmar-Hidegkut-Budapest” border stone on the left, turn right onto the unmarked double-track forest road. The next segment is a beautiful and atmospheric ridge section; immediately at the start, on Tök Hill, turn left for a nice view toward Hidegkút. Later, the view opens to the right, then the ridge narrows and the views on both sides become even more beautiful. At the end, a viewpoint to the right awaits us with views of Pilisborosjenő and the Kevély hills opposite.

Just after the viewpoint, the S▲ trail joins from the right. Without changing direction, we continue on it. We pass by a rock peak on the right side rising towards Szarvas Hill – if you wish, you can run up, although it’s only about 50 m of steep climb, but it may not be worth the effort since we soon reach Calvary Hill with its fantastic 360-degree panorama. However, first, we must tackle the steep ascent lined with stations. From the summit, we can look around the entire Buda Hills, the Pilis behind, and the surrounding settlements below – this is especially memorable on a clear day.

From Calvary Hill, we start descending on a steep, initially very rocky path; it is advisable to walk here until the path softens and leads out to a clearing. From here, we run steeply downhill to the right, and near the bottom, just before the power lines, we sharply turn right onto the S trail, following it for almost 2 km parallel to the ridge back. This single-track trail runs through the forest and includes some sections exposed on steep slopes, requiring careful running. Near the end, at a saddle above on the right, we turn right onto the Z trail, which merges with the K, then turns left going uphill, and beneath the power line pole continues independently as the Z trail as a single-track trail entering the forest. Running along this, we arrive back at Virágos-nyereg.

From Virágos-nyereg, where we are at our 11th kilometer and 360 m altitude, we continue on the K trail, steadily and steeply ascending (85 m over 600 m) to Vihar Hill. After a short descent, we tackle the last climb. First, we reach a saddle where we leave the K trail at a fence. After a little further, after the corner of the fence, we turn left and run along a partially missing fence on an unmarked single-track trail to the first viewpoint, decorated by the concrete circles of former World War II air defense batteries. From here, a beautiful view opens onto the downtown Danube section with suspension bridges and the Castle and Gellért hills. Then we run through to the modern spherical structure of Guckler Károly viewpoint, which we can also run up to, and from there descend toward the Óbuda Főtáv chimney, across the clearing to the green barrier.

After the barrier, we run left on asphalt, then after the parking lot, at the end of the first big curve turn left onto the unmarked path leading to a viewpoint clearing. From here, we continue right on a single-track path that continuously descends, offering repeated beautiful views to the left. We descend to the Z+ normal forest road, where we turn right running level to the asphalt road. On the other side, we continue left and down on the K trail, descending back to Fenyőgyöngye.
