Guckler Károly lookout tower
The lookout platform of the football-like octagonal structure is only 4 meters from the ground nonetheless we can get a stunning full panorama of Budapest, the Danube and the surrounding hills from the height of 499 meters. The first level of the special wooden structure made of pine beams functions as a covered stopover for hikers.
Hármashatár Hill extends well into the city and it is high enough at the same time to have made it a perfect site for an anti-aircraft bunker during WW2. We can follow the Danube’s line until the curve at Gellért hill. In the opposite direction the Megyeri-híd (bridge) catches the eye. The city crawls up to the hill gradually transforming into the forest. It is easy to find the Erzsébet lookout tower on the top of János hill. On the other side behind the radio towers Pilis Mountains and Visegrád Mountains can be seen. Farther we can discover Gerecse and more distant hills of Buda.
It was named after Guckler Károly (1858-1923) famous forester, who excelled in the forestation of the peaks of Hármashatár hill. Because of the huge firewood demand of the city the hillsides were almost completely cleared. Guckler Károly had planted undemanding pine trees to tie the ground before starting to replant native forest.
Close to the lookout tower built by the Pilis Parkerdő Zrt. we can find a restaurant as well as hikers’ lodge of Hármashatár-hegy.
