The Lake Constance-Königssee cycle path runs over a distance of around 455 km in six stages from Lindau to Schönau am Königssee.
The Lake Constance-Königssee cycle path leads on pleasant cycle paths through the gentle valleys and hills of the Alpine foothills. Past significant and impressive cultural and natural monuments such as Neuschwanstein Castle or the Königssee – and always with a view of the peaks of the Allgäu, Bavarian and Berchtesgadener Alps – the route leads from the blooming Lake Constance district to the beautiful Berchtesgadener Land. Blue lakes, green meadows and forests – and of course also the odd sporting challenge – accompany this journey by bike through the Allgäu and southern Bavaria.

We have about 420 km ahead of us from the starting point in Lindau before we reach the Königssee. On a walking tour through Lindau, we have the opportunity to overlook the town from the Mangturm. At the station, we orient ourselves along the shore of the Lake Constance first towards Bregenz. From there, the markings of the Lake Constance-Königssee cycle path guide us northeast. Partly along the Leiblach, it goes uphill on asphalt past Hergensweiler and Hergatz to Gestratz. We have already accomplished just under 30 km. About 15 km remain to Oberstaufen, which lies to the south and still some altitude meters away from us. In Oberstaufen, however, we are rewarded with a magnificent view of the main alpine ridge to the south before we continue far from the main roads towards Immenstadt. We now cycle about 17 km through meadows and fields and enjoy the views of the Nagelfluh chain to our right. Shortly before Immenstadt, at the Large Alpsee, we have the opportunity to refresh our tired legs in the cool water. Immenstadt in the Allgäu is an excellent first stage destination; after all, we have already covered 70 km.
The next morning we follow the signposts to Rettenberg, which lies picturesque at the foot of the Grünten. We cycle a short stretch next to the federal road before turning left towards the north and finally reaching the Rottach reservoir. We pass its southern shore and continue our tour to Nesselwang. When we arrive there, we have already covered over 30 km since Immenstadt. Over fields and through small patches of forest, we continue cycling via Eisenberg to Hopfen am See. At Hopfensee we can refresh ourselves before continuing the tour to Füssen. We then cycle alongside the road to Schwangau and enjoy views of the impressive Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Castles. In Schwangau, 9 km separate us from Halblech, our second stage destination after a total of 86 km.
The third stage from Halblech to Kochel am See is the shortest with just under 60 km. We cycle over fields and through longer stretches of forest first to Saulgrub and Bad Kohlgrub in the middle of the Ammergau Alps. From Bad Kohlgrub we orient ourselves along the northern edge of the foothills towards the southeast and pass through a wildly romantic wetland of the Werdenfelser Land until we reach Eschenlohe. It is worth taking a break here and enjoying the views of the surrounding peaks. The signposting then takes us through a wonderful cultural landscape to the Kochelsee at the foot of the Herzogstand. We have reached our stage destination in Kochel am See.
From Kochel am See, the route continues through meadows and fields to Benediktbeuern, which stretches picturesquely between Benediktenwand and the Loisach-Kochelsee moor. Visiting the Benediktbeuern Monastery is worth a short break. From there we follow the less idyllic federal road to Bad Tölz, located at the northern entrance to the Isarwinkel. The town centre is ideal for a rest. Refreshed, we then cycle mostly along small river courses to Gmund am Tegernsee. We first face a longer climb before we can roll down the last stretch to the lake. We pass the northern shore of the Tegernsee and continue our journey via Hausham to the Schliersee. Scenic, we now pedal along the west shore towards Neuhaus. Time and again, the views of the surrounding landscape captivate us. From Neuhaus to the stage destination Fischbachau it is not far now. In total, we have covered 69 km from Kochel to there.
On the fifth day, we set off from Fischbachau to Bad Feilnbach. We first cycle uphill through the Leitzach valley, then downhill towards the Inn valley. From there, it is not far to Raubling and Neubeuern. Both towns lie directly on the Inn. Now our path gently climbs again and takes us via Frasdorf to Bernau by the Chiemsee. Those who want to take the route a bit more leisurely can cycle to Prien, take the boat to Chieming there and then continue the trip to Traunstein. In this case, detours to the Herren and Frauen islands and visits to Herrenchiemsee Palace and Frauenwörth Monastery are worthwhile. However, we stay on the paved cycle path between the Chiemsee and the Chiemgau Alps and finally reach Traunstein via Siegsdorf. After a total of 84 km, the stage destination is reached.
On the sixth and final stage, we cycle from Traunstein to the Königssee. We first cycle about 30 km on asphalt to Piding in the Berchtesgadener Land. There we look at Staufeneck Castle before heading along the Saalach river to the nearby spa town of Bad Reichenhall. A break in the town centre is worth it. Then we go a stretch along the German-Austrian border before the signposting shows us the way south. Via Bischofswiesen and Berchtesgaden, we reach our long-awaited destination after a daily distance of 63 km and a total distance of 455 km at the foot of the Watzmann, the picturesque Königssee. Here the famous pilgrimage church St. Bartholomew, the symbol of the Königssee, can be visited.
