Größter See in Bayern, auch „bayerisches Meer“ genannt
Der Chiemsee ist mit einer Fläche von 79,9 km² der größte See im Bundesland Bayern und der drittgrößte See Deutschlands (nach dem Bodensee und der Müritz). Er liegt im Chiemgau, östlich von Rosenheim und westlich von Traunstein.

Der Chiemsee beherbergt mehrere Inseln: Die Krautinsel, die weniger weit bekannt ist, sowie die Frauen- und die Herreninsel, die weitaus bekannter sind. Zusammen bilden diese Inseln die Gemeinde Chiemsee. Während die kleinere Fraueninsel vielen Gläubigen mit dem Kloster Frauenwörth als Wallfahrtsort dient, findet sich auf der größeren Herreninsel das Alte Schloss Herrenchiemsee (ein ehemaliges Kloster) sowie das Neue Schloss Herrenchiemsee. Dieses Bauwerk, das vom Märchenkönig Ludwig II. in Auftrag gegeben wurde, ist dem Schloss in Versailles nachempfunden und zieht jedes Jahr zahlreiche Touristen an.
