Lake Constance, whose total area is about 536 km², is located in the foothills of the Alps, with three countries having their borders on its shores:
- Germany in the north, with cities such as Friedrichshafen, Ludwigshafen or Lindau along its shores.
- Austria in the southeast, where Bregenz lies directly on the shore
- Switzerland in the southwest, whose cities Rorschach or Romanshorn border the lake.
Strictly speaking, Lake Constance is divided into two large lakes, the Obersee and the Untersee. These two parts are connected by the Rhine, which flows through the entire Lake Constance. The lake's deepest point is 251 m below the water surface - therefore, it is the largest lake in Germany and the deepest. In addition, the lake is home to several islands, by far the largest and best known being Reichenau. The Reichenau Monastery, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located on this island.
