On paths of the Petite Camargue Alsacienne - Three-meadow round walk
The path leads over trails of the nature park past all important sights:
The Augraben, the building of the Rhine exhibition, the building of the fish farming exhibition, the observation stands overlooking the ponds, the main building housing the administration of the Petite Camargue Alsacienne, as well as ancillary buildings for the researchers. If you are lucky, you may also see the Highland cattle in the pasture.
The Petite Camargue Alsacienne is a nature reserve managed by the Association Petite Camargue Alsacienne, an association with over 600 members and 17 permanent employees. It has been recognized by the ministry since 1982 and was expanded from initially 120 ha to 904 ha in 2006 (mainly the Rhine island). The association is supported by the work of volunteers and donations from its sponsors.
The origin was the fish farming under Napoleon III, who wanted to supply the growing population with cheap food.
It is thanks to the Augraben, as collector of the streams Lertzbach, Liesbach and Mühlenbach, that the area was constantly flooded. Therefore, a facility (1852-1862) was built here for breeding and free distribution. After several changes of ownership, it was shut down in 1971 and began to decay.
It is thanks to the commitment of the "Association Petite Camargue Alsacienne", which, with the help of donors, bought the site and has since continued the fish farming (contract condition), maintained and expanded the facility, cared for the birds and butterflies, and maintained the biotopes.
Today, the "Petite Camargue" is a very popular excursion destination, visited by families, schools, hikers, photographers, and nature lovers in the tri-border area FR-DE-CH. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a leash.
