Today, the cemetery contains approximately 330,000 graves, with up to 25 burials per day, and a “population” nearly twice the number of Vienna’s living residents. A well-known Viennese joke claims the cemetery is “half the size of Zurich, but twice as much fun.”
Initially unpopular due to its distance from the city centre, the authorities introduced the concept of the honorary grave (Ehrengrab) to attract visitors. The cemetery now holds the graves of many distinguished figures, including Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert (moved here in 1888 from Währinger Ostfriedhof), Johannes Brahms, Johann Strauss II, Arnold Schoenberg, Antonio Salieri, Falco (Hans Hölzel), Udo Jürgens, Kurt Waldheim, and Albert Salomon von Rothschild.
Architectural highlights include the centrally located St. Charles Borromeo Church, built in Art Nouveau style (1908–1910) by Max Hegele. Opposite the main gate stands the Feuerhalle Simmering, Vienna’s first crematorium, constructed in 1922 in the style of an oriental fortress.
The Zentralfriedhof is not only a burial ground but also a cultural landmark, reflecting Vienna’s deep musical, political, and artistic heritage.
