The long-distance hiking trail 9 (Salzsteig) leads from Bad Leonfelden in Upper Austria to Arnoldstein in Carinthia at the border with Italy. This stage runs from Frauenstein to Hinterstoder, the endpoint of the first third of the long-distance trail.

The path from Frauenstein to Hinterstoder finally brings us close to the Alps. We spend most of the route along the Steyr, which is dammed into a lake at the Klaus power station. From the Hinterstoder train station into the village, we again follow the Steyr, surrounded by the Totes Gebirge.

    Author’s recommendation

The routes of the long-distance hiking trail 9 in Upper Austria are ideal introductory routes to get your fitness in shape. The paths are very easy and well marked. Those who want to obtain the performance badge must get a stamp at the control points (K), e.g., from a guesthouse, etc. More information can be found in the Alpenverein long-distance hiking guide.

    Roadbook

From the church Frauenstein (K), the path leads us down the mountain. After the town sign, we follow the left path down towards the Steyr. We pass under the motorway bridge and reach the dam in Klaus. A steep staircase leads up the dam, alternatively, you can cross to the opposite shore before the dam and follow the forest path upwards, which passes a small waterfall. Once at the top, we return to the eastern side of the reservoir. We now have the option to follow the gravel road or - more beautiful and recommended in suitable weather - use the Fischersteig, which runs directly along the reservoir. There are always opportunities to switch between the gravel road and the Fischersteig. After a while, we have the opportunity to visit the Devils’ Church (extra effort 30 minutes).
Now we head purposefully towards the train station. Shortly before the station building, the blue-white marking of the Fischersteig leads to the left. However, this is an old marking, which also leads to Hinterstoder, but the "correct" path is signposted again shortly after the station and leads to the guesthouse Steyrbrücke (K).
Now we enter the Stodertal. On the path called Flötzersteig, we repeatedly cross the Steyr. We reach Flötzerstube (cider tavern) and about an hour later arrive in Hinterstoder (K).
Here you can start your journey home by bus and train or book accommodation for the next stage.

    Public transport

Bus connections to the Frauenstein stop from Molln and Kirchdorf an der Krems. I myself drove to the Kirchdorf train station by car and continued from there by bus. From Hinterstoder, a shuttle bus runs every hour to the Hinterstoder station.

    Directions

Take the A9 exit at Klaus an der Pyhrnbahn. On the B138 and B140 towards Frauenstein or Molln.

    Parking

Along the street in the village.
