Die Pfarrkirche wurde erst 1787 fertiggestellt und ist der "Kreuzerhöhung" geweiht. Die Kirche ziert ein weiterer "Kremser Schmidt", dem bedeutensten Barockmaler Österreichs.

Die „Kreuzerhöhungskirche“ in Hinterstoder verdankt sich Kaiser Joseph II., der in seinen Regierungsjahren ein großes Reformprogramm auch für die Kirche bestimmte, indem niemand länger als eine Stunde Wegzeit zur nächsten Kirche haben sollte. Der „Stoder“ gehörte nämlich seit dem 13. Jhdt. zur etwa 20 km entfernten Pfarre Windischgarsten, und das bedeutete damals etwa fünf Wegstunden und damit eine Aufschiebung von Taufen, Hochzeiten und Begräbnissen. 1787 wurde schließlich die spätbarocke Saalkirche mit der Turmhaube fertiggestellt. Die Einrichtung der Kirche stammt zum größten Teil aus dem Stift Spital am Pyhrn.

Und wieder treffen  wir auf den wohl bekanntesten österreichischen Barockmaler Johann Martin Schmidt („Kremser-Schmidt“): u.a. sieht man ein Bild, das die Weihe des „Hospital am Pyhrn“ an die Gottesmutter darstellt. Die Kanzel stammt aus der früheren Josefs-Kapelle in Spital am Pyhrn. Das Hochaltarbild mit der Darstellung der Kreuzerhöhung wurde 1808 vom letzten Schüler des „Kremser Schmidt“, Anton Mayer, gemalt.

Der Friedhof grenzt südlich direkt an die Kirche an. Und dort befindet sich in einer Kapelle ein spätgotisches, fast lebensgroßes Kruzifix aus der Zeit um 1520. Es wird der Veit Stoß-Schule in Nürnberg zugeschrieben. Es lädt wiederum nicht nur Kunstsinnige ein, über die Kreuze in der Welt und im eigenen Leben und das Kreuz Jesu nachzudenken – vielleicht auf einem der schattigen Parkbänke rund um die Kirche.
