Wallfahrtskirche Frauenstein
Die kleine Kirche, die auf einem 502 Meter hohen Hügel jenseits der Steyrschlucht steht, birgt einen der bedeutendsten Kulturschätze Oberösterreichs, der auf Maximilian I. zurückgeht. Der Legende nach soll der Kaiser am Dreikönigstag des Jahres 1489 vor der holländischen Küste in Seenot geraten sein. Zum Dank für seine Errettung gelobte er, eine Schutzmantelmadonna zu stiften.
Diese hat Gregor Erhard aus Ulm um 1515 in meisterhafter Weise geschnitzt – unter dem Mantel der Gottesmutter ist der Auftraggeber deutlich zu erkennen. Die Wallfahrtskirche Frauenstein ist eine Stätte des Gebetes und der Gottesbegegnung. Sie lädt zum Gebet in Stille und Besinnung ein. Mit dieser inneren Einstellung kommen die Pilger seit Jahrhunderten zur Schutzmantel-Mutter-Gottes nach Frauenstein, zu unserer Frauen Capel auf dem Stain. Um 1300 wurde der Bau einer Kirche erstmals urkundlich erwähnt.
Hinter der Kirche erhebt sich das westliche Sengsengebirge mit dem Nationalpark Kalkalpen. Links thront der felsige Hochsengs (1838 m), rechts ragt das Schillereck (1748 m) empor.
