From the German Wine Gate in Schweigen-Rechtenbach, we hike across the border into the French Alsace. Germany's oldest wine education trail, deep forests, and wonderful views over the vineyards of the Rhine plain accompany us.
Start and finish is the German Wine Gate. Through the district Schweigen, we follow the wine education trail to the shelter at Sonnenberg. Past the romantic Chateau St. Paul and excellent vineyards, we enjoy magnificent views over the Rhine plain and Wissembourg. Almost reached Wissembourg, we change into the chestnut forest. Our hiking path later runs parallel to the German-French border into the Mundat Forest. Here you can admire beautiful old border stones. A slightly ascending hiking trail leads us over the Rotsteig to the shelter at Wegscheid. Now it goes back near the border to Sonnenberg and partly on the wine education trail through the district Schweigen back to the starting point.
UFFBASSE! - Campaign for respectful coexistence in nature
Always act considerately, friendly, and with foresight towards everyone you meet on the way.
Respect nature, do not destroy plants, and always stay on the paths. Try to avoid excessive noise and leave the forest before dusk.
Remember a garbage bag for the way and take your trash back home with you.
Please always keep your dog on a leash. Other visitors and animals will thank you.
Observe all path closures for your own safety, even on weekends.
Park only in designated parking areas. Leave space for emergency vehicles and agricultural machinery.
Give priority to agricultural and forestry traffic.

Places to eat: Restaurant Deutsches Weintor and numerous wine taverns in Schweigen-Rechtenbach
A visit to the vintners' taverns in Schweigen-Rechtenbach is recommended. Likewise, after the hike, one should not miss a visit to the picturesque town of Wissembourg and there definitely try the traditional Alsace Flammkuchen typical of the region or enjoy a coffee and delicious pralines in a confectionery.

General advice:
Especially in autumn, care must be taken as fallen leaves can conceal unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. After thunderstorms or rainstorms, trees may still fall or branches may break off. In adverse weather conditions, natural paths can become muddy and slippery. Not all rocks or cliffs are secured with ropes or railings. Surefootedness is required in places. You must expect such path impairments when hiking. If you believe certain path sections are not passable for you, you should bypass them.
NOTE:
We strive to announce all closures due to forestry work or hunting societies on this platform. Nevertheless, there are situations where trails are closed and we may not have been informed. If you unexpectedly encounter a trail closure or detour, please heed the instructions for your own safety.

Roadbook
From Schweigen-Rechtenbach, the gateway to the German Wine Route, we hike across the border into the French Alsace. Germany's oldest wine education trail, deep forests, and wonderful views over the vine-covered Rhine plain accompany us. We start our border region route at the German Wine Gate in Schweigen, the southern start of the German Wine Route. We head west and walk on Längelstraße and Bergstraße into the vineyards, where we encounter the wine education trail. We follow it to the right until we reach a crossroads at the forest edge.
Here we briefly keep right, then a meadow path branching off diagonally left leads us in a curve down to the cemetery of Rechtenbach, where we turn left onto the street "Am Weiher." At the pond, we walk straight ahead a few more meters, then decide on a forest path ascending to the left and again follow a small path diagonally right after a few meters. Our path soon leads into a wider forest road, which now takes us through the extensive forest. After a longer section, a narrow hiking trail marked with a "yellow dot" crosses our path. We follow it to the left but soon leave it again on the left side to ascend further on a small path to Wegscheid.
At the junction with a shelter, we go straight briefly and then turn right into the "Heiligenbachweg." After a few meters, a narrower path marked with a "yellow triangle" branches off to the right, which we now follow through the dense forest at Langenberg. This leads us to the German-French border. The yellow triangle leads us down to the Heiligenbach, which we cross on a bridge. We now orient ourselves on the markings "yellow triangle" and "yellow dot" until they separate and we choose the latter. The Chateau St. Paul, which lies on our path, and our destination, the Wine Gate in Schweigen, are already signposted here. On a beautiful hollow path with old cobblestones, we go uphill and then left through the forest until it opens before us and we can enjoy a magnificent view over the vineyards to Wissembourg and Schweigen-Rechtenbach.
The yellow dot leads us straight through the vineyard landscape back to Schweigen, where we pass the festival grounds at Sonnenberg and also meet the wine education trail again. Now we descend into the village and reach our starting point, the German Wine Gate, via the street "Sonnenberg," Paulinerstraße, and Hauptstraße.

For our hikes, we recommend the following equipment as standard:
Sturdy footwear
Weather-appropriate clothing
Sun and rain protection
Sufficient supply of food and drinks, as not everywhere are there places to eat or shop or they might be closed.
