The Hanák Kolos performance hike is the second longest distance of the Mátrabérc performance hikes and is a significant challenge in terms of difficulty, as it starts from Kékes and leads through the middle and western ridge sections of the mountain range. The nearly 36 km distance is accompanied by an elevation gain of 1289 m.
Although the Hanák Kolos performance hike organized by the tourist association of the same name has been held since 1991, the "big brother," the most difficult section of Mátrabérc (Sirok–Kékes), is missing, making it a serious challenge: starting from Kékes, the route descends first to the Galya-tető massif, then after leaving the Upper Mátra, it climbs onto the Muzsla ridge, all within 9 hours. The route, which connects the country's highest mountain ranges and highest villages, with numerous lookouts and beautiful forests, mostly follows barely undulating ridges and backs, yet the elevation gain to overcome is considerable for those who dare.
The hike can essentially be divided into three parts: first, a descent from Kékes, then a long but relatively gentle ascent to Galyatető. This is followed by a long, comfortable ridge hike rich in views before the path turns into the Csörgő stream valley. Finally, the last challenge is to climb the Muzsla ridge from Mátrakeresztes before the route gradually descends into the Zagyva valley.
