Bányászkör Routes - Schmidt Sándor Circuit
As the first steps in establishing the Bányászkör instant routes, the organizers, the hiking department of the Benedek Endre Cave Research and Nature Conservation Association (BEBTE), developed two overlapping routes. The 32-kilometer Hantken Miksa Circuit and the 54-kilometer Schmidt Sándor Circuit both start and end at the lower entrance of the Reimann Mining History Miniverse in Dorog, which offers good public transport connections, comfortable parking options, and several nearby buffets, snack bars, and cafes for hikers. The longer circuit is named after Schmidt Sándor, who was the director of the Salgótarján Coal Mining Company’s Dorog mining operation for 28 years from 1911. During his directorship, Dorog became again the center of the coal basin.
As is common with instant routes, checkpoints must be verified with QR codes. The Bányászkör routes offer a bit more: each checkpoint also marks a mining-related point of interest—hence there are more of them than usual. The route is neither short nor easy, but it offers several ways of completion. You can choose between hiking, performance hiking, trail running, orienteering, as well as cycling or cycling performance hiking. Hikers, orienteers, and cyclists can also opt for the "touchpoint tour" option, meaning you may travel on any route but must visit every checkpoint.

Author’s recommendation
- Since the route mostly follows unmarked but well-traveled paths and forest roads, good navigation skills are important – the Természetjáró app can help with this.
- The route can now also be traveled in the reverse direction!

Route description:
After the start, we briefly follow the K mark, then climbing the Maria Cave and the stairs of Dorog Calvary, we reach the first viewpoint. Before us unfolds Dorog, Esztergom, the Pilis, the Visegrád Mountains, further away the Börzsöny and the Danube. From here we reach the first checkpoint, then after another short "blue" section, we return to an unmarked path. The viewpoint on Henrik Hill is on top of a huge spoil heap. From here, a wonderful panoramic view reveals the mining area reclaimed by the forests. After a short walk, we arrive at Csolnok to the Mining Museum (visitable by prior arrangement).
Continuing, we touch the former Sand Railway route and then reach the Pollus Hill checkpoint and viewpoint. The panorama shows a view of the area that surprises even regular hikers in the region. From here, we reach Csolnok again via a panoramic route. The next checkpoint is the Memorial of the IX Mine Labour Camp, followed by a side trail on Mókus Hill to the Csolnok cemetery, where the Miner's Memorial can be found. Our path then leads to Miklós Berek, considered the cradle of our mining. After a slight touch of a small pond, we reach Tokod. Up to this point, the first 24 kilometers of the route coincide with the Hantken Miksa circuit.
Here we switch to the Schmidt Sándor circuit. Following the little-used ᵯ (Maria-route) marks, we reach Mogyorósbánya, where we punch at the Community House. Then following the Z marks, and turning onto unmarked paths, we arrive at Bajót. The K◼ mark leads up to the resting place below the caves. We descend on the blue mark to Péliföldszentkereszt, then leaving the settlement on Z, and thereafter K+ then K leads us back to Tokod. This 21-kilometer section involves a significant elevation difference. After Tokod, the rest bench among the vineyards of Hosszú Hill will be a welcome resting point to prepare for the steep, water-eroded, and wild Cigány Valley.
Passing by the Csolnok wildlife park, we return to the K mark, on which we follow to close our tour in Dorog at the starting point code. The many unmarked paths require continuous attention to navigation.
