Bányászkör hiking routes - Hantken Miksa loop
As the first steps in creating the Bányászkör instant routes, the organizers, the Benedek Endre Cave Research and Nature Conservation Association (BEBTE) hiking department, have developed two partially overlapping routes. The 32-kilometer Hantken Miksa loop and the 54-kilometer Schmidt Sándor loop start and end at the lower entrance of the Reimann Mining History Miniverse in Dorog, where there is good public transport connection, comfortable parking facilities, and several buffets, snack bars, and coffee shops nearby welcoming hikers. The shorter loop is named after Miksa Hantken, a mining engineer whose research in the second half of the 19th century laid the foundation for large-scale coal mining in the Dorog coal basin, thus the loop named after him is the basis for route variants that explore the area.
As usual with instant hikes, QR codes must be scanned to verify checkpoints. The Bányászkör routes offer more, as each checkpoint also marks a place of interest related to mining — so there are more of them than usual. The route is moderately long but includes a significant elevation gain. There are multiple ways to complete it: as a hike, challenge hike, trail run, or orienteering run; also as a cycling hike or cycling challenge. Hikers, orienteers, and cyclists completing the route can choose to do the "touchpoint route" meaning you may take any path but must touch every checkpoint.
Completion methods:
- First, register at the Bányászkör site. (There is also the option to start group hikes; in this case, one registration covers multiple people.)
- After logging in, you can start your entry by clicking the “Start New Hike” button.
- Select the route, then the completion method, and finally the desired reward.
- Timing starts when the first QR code is scanned at the start of the hike.

Author’s recommendation
- Since most of the route consists of unmarked but easily passable paths and forest roads, good orientation skills are important - the Nature Walker app can help with this.
- The route can now also be walked in the opposite direction!

Route description:
After the start, we briefly follow the K mark, then climb the stairs of the Mária cave and the Dorog Calvary to reach the first viewpoint. In front of us opens Dorog, Esztergom, the Pilis, the Visegrád Mountains, further beyond the Börzsöny and the Danube. From here we reach the first checkpoint, then after a short "blue marking" section, we return to the unmarked path. The Henrik Hill viewpoint is situated on top of a huge spoil heap. From here, a magnificent panoramic view shows the mining area reclaimed by forests. With a short walk, we arrive in Csolnok at the Mining Museum (visiting by prior appointment).
Moving on, we pass the former Homokvasút railway route, then the Pollus Hill checkpoint and viewpoint. The panorama shows such a view of the surroundings that even those who regularly hike in the area are surprised. From here, we take a panoramic road back to Csolnok. The next checkpoint is the monument of the IX mining shaft labor camp, after which we follow the flank path of Mókus Hill to the cemetery of Csolnok, where the Miner memorial can be found. The route continues to Miklós-berek, considered the cradle of mining here.
After passing a small pond, we enter Tokod. At the vineyards of Hosszú Hill, there is a resting bench where you can prepare for the steep, water-eroded, wild Cigány Valley ascent. Passing by the Csolnok wildlife park, we return to the K mark, and finishing on it, we conclude our hike in Dorog at the code of the starting point.
The route is characterized by short, sometimes steep ascents and descents throughout. Continuous attention is required for orientation due to the many unmarked paths.
