Bike Museum Rally through the Southern Palatinate Rhine Floodplains
The bike rally is not a race against time but rather a bike ride for the whole family, with exciting tasks and questions waiting along the way in museums and information centers.
This bike route takes you through idyllic villages of the southern Palatinate and through the enchanting floodplain landscape on the Rhine. You cycle mainly on bike paths away from the road, which are pleasantly flat. Download the app "Actionbound" and the bound "Museum Rally - Cycle to the Museum" before the tour. This allows you to play the digital treasure hunt on the route. At four stations (Terra Sigillata Museum in Rheinzabern, House of Life on the River in Neupotz, local history museum Fischerhaus in Leimersheim, and the Rhine Floodplains Information Center in Hördt), exciting and interesting tasks await you to solve. At the same time, you learn something about the life of people during Roman times and how people used to live here by the Rhine. You also get to know the flora and fauna of the Rhine floodplains more closely. Who knows, maybe you will see one or the other animal on your bike trip? But don't worry. You can continue cycling even if you get a question wrong.
We ask you to observe the following on your tour. Or as we “Palatines” say:
UFFBASSE! - Campaign for considerate coexistence in nature
- Be considerate on the way - Always behave prudently, friendly and considerately towards everyone you meet along the way. This applies especially to agricultural roads, where winegrowers, farmers, and forestry workers also work on weekends.
- Picnic & trash - Think of a trash bag for the way and take your rubbish back home. Only use furnished rest areas for breaks & picnics.
- Nature protection - Stay on the designated paths and avoid unnecessary noise when you are in nature. Leave the forest at dusk at the latest to avoid disturbing the rhythm of nocturnal animals.

We started the route at Rheinzabern. However, if another location along the route is easier for you to reach, you are welcome to start from there. It is a circular route. So you can start the tour at any point you like. Also, the stations with the tasks can be solved in any order.
Discover and learn even more about the southern Palatinate, its wildlife and plants, and how people used to live here by visiting one of the other museums or taking part in one of the great children’s tours in the Germersheim Fortress.

Safety information
Cycling on agricultural roads - Often our bike routes run on paths shared with others. We therefore ask for considerate and friendly behavior at all times. Winegrowers, farmers, and forestry workers use these agricultural roads through fields, forests, and vineyards for their daily work - also on weekends. Due to work operations and/or weather conditions, the paths may be dirtier at times. Special caution is also advised when passing through the streets in and around Palatinate villages. Road closures and detours must be strictly observed.
Danger situations - Should an emergency occur, quick help is needed. And even though mobile phones can send GPS signals, the classic rescue points are often the fastest option. These are located at places easily accessible to rescue vehicles. Remember the points with green signs and a white cross. In an emergency, return there and give the number on the sign when you make your emergency call. This way, rescuers will know exactly where to find you.

We start at the Terra Sigillata Museum, our first station of the rally. So download the "Actionbound" app and our bound "Museum Rally - Cycle to the Museum" before the route. Go into the museum and answer the tasks waiting for you.
Afterwards, cycle out of the courtyard and turn right onto the main street. Follow the bike signs (white-green signs and watch for the logo of the themed cycle route "From Riesling to Zander" (fish with wine glass). You must follow the cycle path with this logo first. After about 100 m, turn right into Neupotz Street. You will follow this street all the way. Don’t worry, only few cars drive on this street. But still, always keep right and be careful. Passing a carpool parking space, you then cycle along the state road on the bike path towards Neupotz. You cross the B9 on a bridge. At the roundabout, you must continue straight ahead. Be careful again when crossing the street. Before Neupotz, the cycle path takes a right curve. Therefore, you don't have to continue on the main street. Always follow the "From Riesling to Zander" logo, turn left into the town of Neupotz and turn left again into Oberdorf Street towards the church. When you arrive at the church, you will find diagonally opposite on the main street the second station of our rally: "The House of Life on the River". Here you will learn many interesting things about the Rhine, flood protection, and what it means for the people living here to live by such a large river = stream. In the information center, you can not only look at things but also experience many actively.
After your visit, return the same way through Neupotz, past the church along Oberdorf Street to the junction at Otterbach. Here turn left and follow again the cycle path "From Riesling to Zander". This goes along the village, past the sports field and fields until we slowly enter the woods of the Rhine floodplains. At the end of the cycle path is a rest area where we can take a short break, or we turn left immediately onto the Rhine cycle path (blue logo with cyclist and EV15 sign) to Leimersheim. Away from traffic, we can enjoy the peace here and cycle past Rhine floodplain forests and fields up to Leimersheim. In Leimersheim, we leave the Rhine cycle path and turn left past the lake "Fischmal". After crossing the stream to the pumping station, we turn left again before the tennis courts and continue along the lake on St. Gertrudis Street. From now on, watch out for traffic again, as we have to ride on roads for a short distance. At the end of the street, turn left onto the Lower Main Street. The street curves right, and shortly after the curve, on the left side, is already our third station: the local history museum "Fischerhaus" in Leimersheim. In the museum, you learn vividly how people used to live in the southern Palatinate. You will be amazed at what old household appliances and furnishings were once considered modern.
Afterwards, return the same way through Leimersheim until we reach the tennis courts again. Here turn left, cross the country road, continue on the bike path along the country road to the right until we are back on the Rhine cycle path. We follow the Rhine cycle path for a good stretch until a left turn towards Hördt leads and the Klingbach cycle path (green logo with white bell) is signposted. Here we turn left, ride through the forest, and at the end reach another country road. We cross it and turn left onto the roadside cycle path to Hördt and continue to follow the "Klingbach cycle path" into Hördt. When we enter Hördt, we get back onto the road. So, you already know, watch out for drivers again and keep to the right. At the junction, we briefly leave the Klingbach cycle path, which continues straight. Instead, we turn left, ride about 150 m on Schulzen Street, and then turn left again into Kloster Street. After about 100 m, turn right into St. Georg Street. We are now in a quiet residential area. Although you still need to watch for traffic, normally there aren’t many cars here. You ride this street straight ahead. At the end, there is a short downhill, and here you will find our last station with our tasks and questions: the Hördt Rhine Floodplain Center. In the information center, there are many stations where you have to be active yourself to learn about the flora and fauna of the Rhine and the Rhine floodplains. It certainly won’t be boring.
You have now made it. After your visit to the Rhine Floodplain Center, you have answered all the tasks of our bound. CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Now it’s time to finish the bike ride back to our starting point, the Terra Sigillata Museum in Rheinzabern. For this, you ride back the same way you came in Hördt. So back on St. Georg Street, left into Kloster Street. Then left onto Schulzen Street and after about 50 m immediately right into Grünwald Street. At the next junction, you see the signs for the Klingbach cycle path again. Here turn left and follow the Klingbach cycle path out of Hördt. Passing fields, we now ride into Rülzheim. Be careful again in Rülzheim because we ride on car roads again. But cars must also drive slowly here in the 30 km/h zone. We follow the Klingbach cycle path through Rülzheim to Eisenbahn Street. In Eisenbahn Street, the Klingbach cycle path turns right, but we continue straight on the street into the town center. At the end of the street, turn right into Mittlere Ortsstraße and after about 50 m immediately turn left again into Hoppelgasse. We continue straight, past the cemetery until we finally reach the roadside cycle path, which leads us along the country road out of Rülzheim to Rheinzabern. In Rheinzabern, we cycle along the main street for a short stretch until we see the entrance to the Terra Sigillata Museum, our starting point, on the left again. Congratulations again on having completed the bike ride. Now you surely deserve a refreshment!
