Whether on the French or German side, the Rhine and the Rhine plain offer magnificent natural landscapes alternating between lush forests, bright meadows, and fertile fields. Cycling allows you to fully appreciate them. Start from Hagenbach in southern Palatinate and follow the Rhine up to Seltz in northern Alsace. You will have the opportunity to experience the Bienwald forest, many floodplain areas, and the exceptional National Nature Reserve of the Sauer Delta with its remarkable biotope always along the Rhine. Numerous idyllic spots invite you to regularly stop along the route where you can watch boats passing on the Rhine.

In the second part of the circuit, you will travel inland. Besides short forest sections, charming villages, meadows, and fields are along the way. Alsace and southern Palatinate are known for their fruit and vegetable cultivation. The Franco-German friendship is also present in the two border villages Scheibenhardt (German) and Scheibenhard (French). The two towns are connected by a bridge crossing the Lauter. Every year, a cross-border Franco-German festival is organized.

    Author’s recommendation

The culinary delights of the Palatinate and Alsace can be found throughout the route, for example in Lauterbourg, Munchhausen, Seltz, or Neuburg at the “Lautermuschel,” the floating restaurant located at the mouth of the Lauter on the Rhine.

    Roadbook

From Hagenbach station, you will follow the cycle path and cross the roundabout of the eastern bypass of the town. At the allotment gardens, just after the stream, turn right and follow the green and white signs indicating the cycle path. You will follow the asphalted agricultural access road until you reach the Rhine Cycle Route – EuroVelo15. Still on the Rhine Cycle Route – EuroVelo15, you will cycle towards Neuburg and Lauterbourg (F) and pass in front of the floating restaurant Lautermuschel, which also houses a navigation museum. In the town of Neuburg-am-Rhein, there is also the Rheinaue museum, which clearly documents the local history, the Rhine and its rectification as well as life along the river. You will continue past the Neuburg ferry, which allows you to cross to the other side of the Rhine, at Neuburgweier. You will continue along the Rhine towards France.

After crossing the border, you will pass near Lauterbourg, a charming town known as the “Gateway to France” featuring one of the most beautiful Alsatian nautical bases, the Mouettes Base. You will continue on the Lauter Valley Cycle Route (IC51) for a few kilometers before joining the EuroVelo15 – Rhine Cycle Route. You will cross the National Nature Reserve of the Sauer Delta near Munchhausen. Feel free to go through the door of the Nature House to better appreciate the natural treasures of the area! You will continue on the EuroVelo15 and pass near the Seltz ferry, very popular with cycle tourists.

You will head towards the center of Seltz by taking the Sauer Valley Cycle Route (IC24). You will have the opportunity to visit the Tourist Office and the Krumacker Museum, which traces the Rhine history of the small town. Continue to Schaffhouse-près-Seltz, Wintzenbach, and Neewiller-près-Lauterbourg through rolling landscapes following the RD468. Finally, you will find the Lauter Valley Cycle Route again up to Scheibenhard, where you will cross the border once more.

From the French town of Scheibenhard, you will cross the bridge to reach the German town of Scheibenhardt. From there, follow the thematic cycle paths “Rund um den Bienwald” or “Bienwald-Rheinauen-Tour” up to Berg. At Berg, turn left onto Bruchbergstraße. Toward the end of the street, follow the green and white cycle route signs to the right into “Waldstraße” towards the football field. The cycle path leads you through the Bienwald forest, passes again in front of Neuburg, and takes you back to Hagenbach. In Hagenbach, turn right onto Bahnhofstraße, which takes you back to your starting point (Hagenbach station).
