From 1727 there was a ferry connection from Neuburg on the left bank of the Rhine to Neuburgweier on the opposite bank.
As early as the Middle Ages, the Rhine at Neuburg was part of the long-distance road link between Metz (Lorraine) and Cannstadt (Stuttgart) and was therefore crossed using a ferry. As Neuburg was still on the right bank of the Rhine at this time, the ferry travelled between Hagenbach and Neuburg. After the breakthrough of the Rhine in 1595, at a time when Neuburg was an island, there were two ferry connections. From 1724, a ferry connection from Neuburg on the left bank of the Rhine to Neuburgweier on the opposite bank is confirmed.
With the construction of the bridge between Maximiliansau and Karlsruhe-Maxau in 1865, the ferry in Neuburg became less important, which is why the service was even cancelled for a time. The ferry has been running daily again since May 1984!
