Legendák
Több legenda is kötődik a romhányiak büszkeségéhez. Az egyik szerint innen irányította Rákóczi a romhányi csatát, majd amikor a kezében lévő pálcát leszúrta a földbe, az megeredt és terebélyes fává növekedett. Egy másik úgy tartja, hogy az akkor már tekintélyes méretű mogyorófa alatt állt a fejedelem sátra a csata idején, egy harmadik szerint rodostói száműzetéséből küldött egy facsemetét, hogy ültessék el ezen a helyen a csata emlékére – ez utóbbiról állítólag írásos feljegyzések is vannak.
Az idő vasfoga
A próbálkozások ellenére nem lehetet megmenteni a romhányiak 300 éves büszkeségét. Az ikonikus fa a 2022-es aszály után kezdett haldokolni, a következő évben már nem hozott élő hajtásokat: teljesen elszáradt. Hanyatlásában a kora is közrejátszott. A kivágása szóba sem jöhet, a helyiek szeretnék megtartani, ameddig csak lehetséges. Csupasz, élettelen állapotában is tekintélyes látvány, mintha szoborrá vált volna. Igaz, ebben a formájában már aligha fog több száz évig létezni.
Némi remény
A Rákóczi-fa megmentéséért több mindennel próbálkoztak a szakemberek. Többek között begyűjtötték a magvakat továbbszaporítás céljából, de egyik sem csírázott ki. Ugyanakkor a haldokló famatuzsálem közelében találtak egy életképesnek tűnő fiatal egyedet, amely a fa genetikai utódjának tekinthető.

- A Romhány déli határában vezető Országos Kéktúra nyomvonaláról a K+ jelzésen kanyarodhatunk fel a fához (0,6 km, szintemelkedés nélkül).
Parking
- Parkolni a Bereczki Máté utcában érdemes, közvetlenül a Rákóczi-fához vezető, sövényes ösvény mellett.
