A János vára-hegy tetejére felvezető lépcsőrengeteg leküzdése után a kilátó tetejéről csodálatos körpanoráma a jutalmunk: a Tokaji-hegység északkeleti része rajzolódik ki előttünk.
Az erdővel borított János vára csúcson kilátó biztosítja a fák fölé jutást: a kilátószintről körpanorámát élvezhetünk a zempléni hegyvilágra. A torony mellett padokon pihenhetünk, amire szükségünk is lehet a hegytetőre vezető, szuszogtató lépcsősor megmászása után.
Kilátó a János vára hegyen
A 283 m magas János vára-hegy tetejére 2015-ben építették a 20 m magas, faszerkezetű kilátót, így az erdővel borított hegycsúcs közkedvelt kilátóponttá vált. Az építmény tetejére 64 lépcsőfokból álló csigalépcső vezet fel. Ám ezzel lesz a legkevesebb küzdelmünk: előtte Kovácsvágásról összesen 967 lépcsőfokot kell megmásznunk a hegytetőre vezető úton. 470 méter alatt 72 métert emelkedünk a lépcsősoron. Szerencsénkre a felfelé vezető úton, kevéssel féltáv után, létesítettek egy esőbeállós pihenőhelyet, amit nem szégyen igénybe venni.
Körpanoráma a zempléni tájra
A kilátóból minden égtáj felé remek kilátást élvezhetünk. Nyugati irányban a Som-hegy, keleti irányban a Fekete-hegy látványosan hullámzó csoportjára, déli irányban a Háromhutai-hegycsoport tömbjére láthatunk rá. Azonban az északi irányban feltáruló táj a leglátványosabb: a Hegyköz lágyan hullámzó dombjai mögött nyugatról kelet felé a Kánya-hegy vonulata, a Milic csoportja, a Bába-hegy, a Korom-tető tömbje és a hazánk legidősebb kőzeteit felfedő Gira-hegy–Mátyás-hegy-vonulat tűnnek fel. Ha szerencsénk van, az ősrögök mögött a Vihorlát csúcsai is kirajzolódhatnak a távolban.

- Busszal érkezve a Kovácsvágás, községháza megállóban kell leszállnunk.

- A Kovácsvágás, községháza buszmegállótól a kilátó táblákat követve érhetjük el a János vára kilátót. A Fő utcán déli irányba (Vágáshuta felé) indulunk el, majd 200 m múlva – a székelykapu mellőzése után – jobbra fordulunk. 280 m múlva érjük el a Fenyvesalja vendégház melletti parkolót, ahonnan újabb jobbkanyart véve kezdjük meg a lépcsősort, s vele együtt a hegymenetet. 470 méternyi lépcsőzés után jutunk fel a kilátóba (0,9 km, 125 m szintemelkedés).

- Ha szeretnénk megnézni a falu látnivalóit is, autónkat Kovácsvágás községházájának parkolójában hagyhatjuk.
- Ha csak a kilátóra vagyunk kíváncsiak, a Fenyvesalja vendégház melletti parkolót célszerű választani.
