Saxon-Bavarian City Network: Zwickau - Chemnitz 4/4
The Saxon-Bavarian City Network links historical commonalities with its cycling routes and builds bridges between cities and regions. Our route suggestions use existing and marked cycle touring paths.
The stage begins leisurely, then, after a sportily demanding section, finishes pleasantly. The start is in Zwickau, the fourth largest city in Saxony. Tightly connected through August Horch with the automotive industry, it is also the cultural center as the birthplace of Robert Schumann. From there, we cycle leisurely past the Glauchau Reservoir into Glauchau. Here, the historically and architecturally interesting Double Castle and the Bismarck Tower await a visit. Later, the route leads past the Oberwald Reservoir to Hohenstein-Ernstthal.
Via Oberrabenstein and Rabenstein, we finally reach Chemnitz, Saxony’s third largest city. Famous for its music, culture, and art scene, it also houses the Saxon Industrial Museum and characteristics of industrial architecture. In addition, the city center invites you to stroll around.

Roadbook
This cycling route is not marked with its own logo. The route itself runs on existing cycle paths and lightly trafficked roads and is also easily rideable in the opposite direction.
We start at the train station in Zwickau. From here, we connect to the paved Mulde Cycle Path, which takes us over Pölbitz and Cossen through the Mulde floodplains until we cross the Mulde at Cossen and ride along the right side of the winding Mulde up to Kleinwulm. There we change sides of the river and continue through floodplain areas on the left of the river. Along the way, we pass Schlunzig and Niederschindmaas. Shortly after the Glauchau reservoir, which is located on the right of the Mulde, the Mulde turns right, but we continue straight ahead and ride left next to the flood channel. The Mulde Cycle Path lets us cross the flood channel after about one kilometer and leads us into the city center, where we meet the Mulde for the last time and cross it again. In Glauchau, two sights await us: the Double Castle (Vorder- and Hinterglauchau Castles) and the Bismarck Tower. From the Bismarck Tower, you can see as far as Leipzig on a clear day.
We leave the city of Glauchau again. At the town exit, the Mulde Cycle Path meets the Saxon City Route, which we now switch to. Note that the Mulde Cycle Path turns left shortly after Schermühle or just before Reinholdshain, while the Saxon City Route continues straight ahead. From here, a slight climb begins. On the way to Hohenstein-Ernstthal, we cycle past the Reinholdshain forest and the Ebersbach forest. Afterwards, we pass through Grimbach and see the Oberwald reservoir to our left. Our route leads past a campsite into the hilly Oberwald. After a short distance, staying on the Saxon City Route, we reach the A4 and have the opportunity to make a detour to Hohenstein-Ernstthal. The birthplace of Karl May is home, among other things, to a Motorsport Museum. There is also a textile museum, the Huthaus - St. Lampertus, and the Karl May Cave.
The route continues along the Saxon City Route. It leads through green areas up to Oberrabenstein. A detour to visit Rabenstein Castle is possible. We pass through Rabenstein and Neustadt. When arriving in Chemnitz, the route can be crowned with a visit to Villa Esche (Cultural Forum), the TIETZ (Cultural Center), or the Wasserschloss Klaffenbach, which is located a little outside the city center.
