Das TIETZ vereint das Museum für Naturkunde Chemnitz, die Stadtbibliothek Chemnitz, die Städtische Musikschule Chemnitz, die Volkshochschule Chemnitz, die Neue Sächsische Galerie und das Städtische Kulturmanagement.
Am 23. Oktober 1913 wurde das damals größte Kaufhaus Sachsens eröffnet. Der Entwurf sah eine für die damalige Zeit sehr moderne Stahlbetonskelettkonstruktion mit 4 Vollgeschossen über dem Keller vor. Wilhelm Kreis verstand es die kolossale Baumasse durch eine akzentuierte Fassadengliederung wieder in den Maßstab der städtebaulichen Umgebung zu bringen.
Zentrales Element des Innenraums ist der große Lichthof, flankiert von zwei kleinen Lichthöfen. Nach Entwürfen des Chemnitzer Architekten Erich Basarke wurde 1926-27 der noch original erhaltene Erweiterungsbau an der Wiesenstraße angefügt.
