Lahnwanderweg 11th stage upstream Braunfels - Wetzlar
History and stories shape today's stage. It starts in Braunfels with its fairytale castle, old town, and the Herren garden. In the FFH and bird protection area Weinberg, nature and landscape lovers get their money’s worth. The protected area is home to many rare animal and plant species and is still grazed by sheep as in the past. Three to four times a year, a shepherd with more than 800 animals moves over the meadows. The Kalsmunt castle ruin once protected Wetzlar and the "Hohe Straße", a formerly very important trade route from Cologne to Frankfurt. From there, it goes down to Wetzlar with its picturesque old town.

Roadbook
From the marketplace, you leisurely stroll through the town. Via the street "am Kurpark", Fürst-Ferdinand-Straße, Berliner Straße, and Hegebachweg, you finally reach the edge of the town. Across open country and through a small forest, you walk down towards Oberndorf. Behind the Solmsbach, at the edge of Oberndorf, it is worth glancing back, as you can see the Braunfels Castle once again in its fairytale splendor. From here, it steadily goes uphill along the forest edge until you finally reach the Eisenberg.
Passing the Margaretenhöhe mine, accompanied by wide views, you walk along the forest edge to the Feldbergblick. Here, in good weather, you can see far into the Taunus. A sign by the path reminds you of the Amanda mine. It was once the most productive mine in the Wetzlar district. On a wide gravel path, you go through the FFH and bird protection area Weinberg with its species-rich fauna and flora. With a lot of luck, you can encounter the shepherd here. But even so, nature and landscape lovers will get their money’s worth here.
Up and down through the forest, you now walk to the Kalsmunt castle ruins on the hill above Wetzlar at 243 m elevation. It was built under Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. Climbing the tower as part of a guided tour is an experience! Because where else can you enjoy such an impressive view of Wetzlar? Then you go down into the cathedral and optics city. Follow the marking over the pedestrian crossings to Schillerplatz. From there, the path leads past pretty half-timbered houses to the Eisenmarkt. Wetzlar invites you to stop with its picturesque old town and numerous restaurants.
