The Kalsmunt castle ruins originated from a Staufer castle (circa 1160 - 1180) that was meant to protect Wetzlar and the "Hohe Straße".
The castle complex Kalsmunt was built – as was usual in the Middle Ages – on a hilltop to allow for better defense. But why is there a rise here in particular? Geology provides the answer.
The notable peak of Kalsmunt consists of resilient basalt. About 40 million years ago, during the Tertiary period, basaltic rock melt flowed through volcanic activity over older rock layers. Experts believe that both Kalsmunt and Stoppelberg were once ascent channels – known as stems – of small lava flows.
In the last two million years of the Quaternary, wind, weather, and rivers have shaped the basalt mound through erosion. Today, the mound is partially covered by loose rocks, indicating deposits from river-related erosion.
Even today, the ruins of the once powerful Staufer castle testify to the historical significance of Kalsmunt. Built between 1160 and 1180 under Emperor Frederick I (1152–1190), it was part of the Staufer defense system. The castle not only protected the young imperial city of Wetzlar but also secured the important trade route "Hohe Straße", which connected Cologne with Frankfurt via Wetzlar. Today, the imposing keep, the Kalsmunt tower, is still preserved. From there, visitors can enjoy an impressive panoramic view over Wetzlar and the surrounding area.
