Remete Cave is located near Hűvösvölgy, its dark entrance can be seen above the creek bed in the white limestone hillside. You need only a lamp or headlight to visit this cave.

Remete Cave is a typical cavemen’s dwelling. Virtually nearly all caves that are freely accessible, with natural entrance, keep some memories about human presence in ancient times.  Different periods forced humans to stay temporarily or permanently in such natural holes or dwellings for various reasons.  Stone Age men used them as a safe abode, while in the ice age, a hut built inside on poles made caves more comfortable. Later, fugitives also ended up here, using caves as a temporary shelter or even a hideout, as it might have seemed too mysterious for the people chasing them. The pursuers themselves also ran away when they caught sight of the cave, suspecting the gate of the underworld there, especially if smoke or noises came out of it. Of course, if one had something precious to hide, he had to leave only his valuables in the depths of a cave, being sure they would be protected as in a safe for a long time. Some caves with a well hidden entrance were suitable for hiding even counterfeit operations.

All these things happened in Remete Cave, and were well hidden until the first excavations started in 1914 by Ottokár Kadić. His work was continued by László Vértess, although left incomplete so far.

Remete Cave is situated along the Blue Trail, between Máriaremete and Nagykovácsi. It was named after a hermit, who had found shelter here after the dissolution of the Hungarian order of Pauline Order in 1782. To visit the cave, there is no need for special equipment, with a flashlight you can also discover the more hidden holes of it inside. Regarding its geological origin, it cannot be considered as cold water or thermal water cave, however, it seems to be a fossil solutional cave, which had poured its water to the creek bed once. Its typical geological formations mostly disappeared due to freezing and cracking, although some traces of solution can still be found in its inner parts. The total length of the cave system is 44 meters, and it is 15 meters vertically.
