The tower opened in 1939 but through the years it was outgrown by trees. In 2014 it was extended with reinforced concrete splicing to restore the panoramic function. Now it has a height of 30 meters instead of the former 17 meters. The new structure was designed by Csaba Kovács and Áron Vass-Eysen, designers of Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design making it one of the country’s highest lookout tower providing a 360 degree panoramic view.
The tower sits on the peak of Péter-hegyese located on the rim of Western Mátra, which allows for an unmatched view. You can see the ridge of Eastern Mátra from the mass of Kékes to Sirok. Opposite the Great Plain Bükk Plateau rises the highest in the east. In the north you can identify Heves-Borsod hills and Karancs-Medves region. In exceptionally clear weather the Low and High Tatras can also be spotted in the distance.
On the western side the low hills of Cserhát are visible, however, most of them are obstructed by the wooded mass of Upper Mátra. In the distance we can discover the peak of Nyikom Hill, the ridge of Muzsla Hill and the southern peaks of Mártra.
In the upper section of the tower there are three bivouac rooms for rent. Information is available in the Tourist Center nearby. Thanks to the colored windows you can enjoy a stunning light show inside.
