A bükkmatuzsálemek alatti, meredek ösvény (érkezzünk fentről vagy lentről) egyszer csak elvékonyodó, magas füvű gerincszakaszra vezet; az erdőt e kiugró ponton melegkedvelőbb fajok alkotják. Itt lépünk át egy sáncárkot is, a Galyavár egyetlen érzékelhető maradványát.
Vár ugyan nincs, a panoráma azonban lenyűgöző: a Nyugati-Mátra sűrű erdők fedte lejtői nagy meredekséggel futnak le a Mátralába lankái felé, mögülük még éppen kibukkan a Cserhát Tepke-gerince. Észak felé a Karancsvidék szlovákiai magaslatai hullámoznak (tiszta időben mélyen belátunk a Felvidékre).
Most kőhalom
Magáról az erődítményről csak annyit tudni biztosan, hogy a mai Magyarország legmagasabban fekvő várhelye, de eredetéről, építőiről, koráról nincsenek biztos információk. A középkorban vélhetően használhatták, hiszen a kutatások szerint ekkor megerősítették. Stratégiailag kiváló helyen állt: három oldalról természetes akadályt biztosító lejtők védelmezték, csak délen volt szükség nagyobb sáncárkokra. Valószínűleg palánk is védhette. Lejjebb óriási andezitsziklák tűzdelik a hegyoldalt, és az ösvény is kibukkan egy tetemesebb tereplépcsőre.
Nehezített ösvény
A Galyavárhoz vezető ösvény helyenként nehezen járható, csúszós, télen jeges is lehet. Ereszkedni is nehéz rajta, de számoljunk azzal is, hogy Galyatetőre küzdelmes kapaszkodással lehet csak visszajutni – fontoljuk meg előre, megér-e ennyit a panoráma, amit a fenti kilátóból még szélesebb formában láthatunk.

Public transport
- A várhelyet legegyszerűbben a Galyatető, Kodály Zoltán sétány buszmegállóból lehet elérni.
- Indulhatunk a Mátraszentimre, csillagvizsgáló bejárati út buszmegállótól is.
- Lentről indulva a Szuha, Mátraalmás buszmegállóból indíthatjuk a túrát.

Directions
- Galyatetőről kövessük a nyugat felé a S jelzést, majd a falu széle utáni elágazásban forduljunk jobbra a P▲ jelzésre, amely meredek lejtőn vezet a várhelyre (1,9 km, 12 m szintemelkedés).
- A csillagvizsgáló buszmegállótól sétáljunk rá a fák között pár méterre vezető turistaútra, amelyen forduljunk jobbra a K jelzést követve. Hamarosan elérjük az elágazást, amelyen balra, P▲ jelzésre térve ereszkedhetünk le a Galyavárhoz (1,5 km, 25 m szintemelkedés).
- Mátraalmásról a P▲ jelzés vezet a Galyavárhoz (1,6 km, 275 m szintemelkedés).
Parking
- Galyatetőn a turistacentrum parkolóját érdemes használni, de a Vasas utca végén is parkolhatunk.

Mátraalmáson a Galya út menti, főtérhez közeli ABC oldalában találunk parkolóhelyet.
