Road types
- Mostly single-track path
- Some normal dirt road
- A few hundred meters of asphalt in Mátraszentimre
Energy distribution
Basically, the first half of the route descends, the second half ascends. But don’t expect an easy roll at the start either, as we have to cope with many waves.
Recommended period
It can be completed at any time of day and season.
Our trail running section is supported by Dockyard. The route is recommended by the legendary Csaba Németh, Hungary's most successful active trail runner.
Author’s recommendation
- Have a 200 forint coin with you as you will need it to enter the Galya lookout.
- If the Ágasvár tourist house area, which our route passes through, is closed due to the virus situation, we can bypass the closed area from the right, north-west, and continue the route as planned.

Detailed description of the run
Starting from the Galyatető Tourist Center, head toward the lookout, but soon turn left onto the unmarked path; it's worth visiting the lookout on the way back. Passing under the radio antennas, we join the K trail and warm up with an easy jog for the upcoming tight half-marathon. Shortly after the entrance to the biathlon shooting range and ski slopes, run carefully as we turn right onto the S trail. Along the northern side of Piszkés Peak, we can enjoy a magnificent view. On the edge of Mátraszentisván, we wind among fir trees, then follow the K▲ trail ascending a short climb up to the Vörös-kő lookout. Here, after a stairway, it's worth catching your breath while observing the landscape rich in hills and mountains north of the Mátra.
From the lookout, we jog down around the village cemetery onto a well-run, dirt road section. Approaching Ágasvár, the terrain becomes increasingly wild, and the views of the surrounding mountain peaks improve. Before the famous Newton rock, we leave the path leading to the summit and continue jogging along the single-track K trail, with a steep valley wall on our left below. Soon we reach the Ágasvár tourist house. Crossing the Foton meadow, stay alert, and turning left, switch to the Z◼ trail. At the beginning of the Csörgő gorge, we reach the lowest point of the run; from here, we gain elevation against the flow of the creek. After a narrow two-kilometer gorge run, we reach the creek bank and cross the first of many expected crossings. Shortly after, we run past the sign marking the former location of the Csörgő mill. The mill's ruins can no longer be found as they were washed away by the creek. Soon we bid farewell to the babbling water and climb a steep ascent. After a pine forested terrace, the runner might be surprised by various animals. Both ends of the Mátraszentimre animal park feature lookouts that help to observe the animals and the picturesque surroundings more closely.
We run into Mátraszentimre along Eötvös József Street and then turn left in the center. We follow the K+ trail to the town's border, where we switch to the branching P+ trail. In a park forest atmosphere, we jog along a built path between benches. After the developed forest rest area on the Bőgős meadow, we cross the road and begin a steep climb on the P trail. We run up towards Torony and Piszkés Peak, which will leave deep memories in our legs. Continuing before the entrance to the observatory, fortunately, easier terrain awaits. After a few minutes of running, we reach a familiar fork. From here, we continue on a familiar path, but in the opposite direction from the beginning of our run. With one exception: on the final section, this time, turn toward the lookout and climb the stairs one last time. From here, we can look around and rest satisfied after the previous hours' exertion.
