Sajnos a Mátrában szinte sehol, de még a legmeredekebb lejtőkkel határolt, fordított S-alakú főgerincen is csak néhány helyen maradtak meg igazán idős erdők. A Galya-tető környékén apróbb töredékek, a Kékesen nagyobbak, de ott is fiatal gazdasági erdőkkel körülvéve. Egyedül a keleti részeken, a Cserepes-tető környékén találunk olyan idős erdőket, amelyeket legalább 80-100 éves erdők nagyobb tömbjei vesznek körül.

- A Gyalya, alsó buszmegállótól a S jelzésen déli irányba kell elindulni. 400 métert követően jobbra kiágazó jelzetlen ösvényen érjük el a Nyesettvárat és az öreg erdőt (0,7 km, 14 m szintemelkedés).
Parking
- Galyatető déli határában, a Galya, alsó buszmegálló közelében, a Mátrai útról kiágazó út torkolatában tehetjük le az autót.
