The Landsee Castle Ruins in the middle of Burgenland is one of the largest castle ruins in Central Europe and a popular excursion destination in the midst of the Landseer Mountains Nature Park.
The origins of the Landsee Ruins are currently untraceable, but it was first mentioned in 1158 in the tradition book of the Göttweig Monastery. Children and parents can still recognize the impressive fortifications in this castle ruin.
The Landsee Ruins came into Hungarian hands in 1222 but soon changed owners again. The history of Gertrud von Weißpriach, who ruled there in the 16th century and was known for her violence, especially captivates children. With the help of the robber Franz Magusch, they primarily ambushed merchants on their travels through Burgenland. The once formidable Landsee Castle had become a feared stronghold of robbers.
In 1612, the Landsee Ruins came into the hands of the Esterhazy family, who ensured the completion of the castle in 1666. A major fire in 1772 triggered the devastation of this castle.
Today, families can access the castle through the large preserved entrance gate, via bridges and courtyards to "Don Jon," the keep. From its viewpoint, children and parents can enjoy a splendid panoramic view over Mittelburgenland extending into the Bucklige Welt.
