A somewhat challenging hike from Kobersdorf to the Landsee ruin and back to the starting point via the historically significant "Judensteig".
This hike leads you along the traces of the Jewish communities in Burgenland. From Kobersdorf with the Jewish synagogue to the Landsee ruin and back via the "Judensteig". The Landsee ruin offers stunning views, on one side to Lake Neusiedl and on the other to the Bucklige Welt and the Wechsel region. That brings us to the "Judensteig" and how it got its name.
With the imperial expulsion from the Styrian lands by Emperor Maximilian I, the Jews fled eastward. Here, the Jews found refuge through the Esterházy counts. The Jews traveled as itinerant merchants through the lands because they had to pay protection money and provide for their families.
For the Jewish merchants, there was a separate decree from Emperor Leopold I, indicating that the Jews were additionally charged.
Therefore, it was not surprising that especially the Jews tried to avoid these costs. Because the so-called "Binkeljuden", who had neither horse nor cart, could make do with a woodland path to reach their trading destinations.
The "Judensteig" was a toll-free route. It is the connection from Kobersdorf to the Landsee castle ruin. At the same time, it was the gateway to their customers at markets and farms in the areas of Kirchschlag, Wiesmath, Lichtenegg, and Edlitz as well as Wiener Neustadt.
The farms named "Judenbauer" served as overnight accommodations for the Jewish merchants.
