Kövesd a 12. században a honfoglalás-korabeli Atyusz nemzetség birtoka volt. Egy 1121-es adománylevelükben az almádi monostor (Monostorapáti) részére adományt tesznek, ebben az írásos emlékben szerepel először Kövesd neve „Cuesth” formában. Egészen a 20. századig Csopak és Balatonkövesd két különálló település volt, és csak 1940-ben egyesítették a mai Csopak néven ismert településsé.
A Szent Miklós tiszteletére szentelt templomot először 1363-ban említik, építésének időpontját a 13. századra tehetjük. Miklós püspök nem csak jótékonyságáról volt híres, de egy legenda szerint imáival megmentett több, viharban hánykolódó halászbárkát, így lett a hajózás és a balatoni hajósok védőszentje is.
1548-ban a törökök sok más környékbeli templommal egyetemben ezt is lerombolták, innentől már csak romként vagy pusztatemplomként említik. A 19. század elején a községi pásztor használta a romot és környékét, bikaistállót, lakóépületet és pajtát alakítottak ki, nádtetővel fedve be a középkori műemléket.
1966-ban állították helyre a romot, ami a mai Kossuth Lajos utca egyik telkén található. A szépen rendben tartott telekre bárki szabadon bemehet, és közelebbről is megnézheti a templomromot. Az épület déli oldalán jól látható a vöröskő keretes egykori bejárat.
A kis kertben időnként községi programokat tartanak.

- Helyközi busszal érkezve a Csopak, gyógyszertár megállónál szálljunk le.
- Vonatról a Csopak állomáson szállunk le.

- A buszmegállótól lefelé induljunk a főutcán, mintegy 100 méter múlva, bal oldalon találjuk a romot.
- A vonatállomástól induljunk felfelé a Kossuth Lajos utcán. 550 méter séta után jobb oldalon láthatjuk a romot.
Parking
- Mivel a Kossuth Lajos utca elég szűk, itt nem lehet parkolni. Érdemes följebb, a Petőfi utca sarkán lévő parkolóig menni vagy bekanyarodni a Palóznaki utcába, 50 méterre ott is találunk parkolót.
