Az Árpád-kori Szent István-templom 1830-ban leégett, és csak a tornya maradt meg. Azóta áll csonkán a torony, amely Csopak egyik jelképévé vált. A település felső központjában lévő torony körül szépen rendezett park, szökőkút, játszótér is található.
Az Árpád-korban épült Szent István-templomot már 1266-ban megemlítik írásban, mint csúcsíves, egyhajós templomot, amit a veszprémi káptalan építtetett. A 17-18. században többször is gazdát cserélt a templom, hol a katolikus, hol a református egyház vette birtokba. Az egykori Szent István-templomból való 17. századi úrvacsorakehely például a mai napig a csopaki református egyház birtokában van.
Miután túlélte az évszázados vallási harcokat, legközelebb 1830-ban hallunk a templomról, ekkor ugyanis egy villámcsapás miatt teljesen leégett a hajója. 1960-ban már annyira rossz állapotban volt az épület, hogy inkább elbontották, csak a viszonylag épen maradt tornyot hagyták meg, ami később új tetőt kapott.
1977 és 1990 között a toronyban kapott helyet a helytörténeti gyűjtemény, ez ma már a közeli Plul malomban található. 2009-ben rendezték a torony körüli területet. Az egykori Hősök terén, ami 2000 óta a Millenniumi Park nevet viseli, rózsakert, szökőkút és padok várják a látogatókat.
Egy helyi lakos kezdeményezésére közadakozásból és a lengyel testvérváros adományából két harangot öntetett a település, így közel 60 év után 2017 őszétől ismét szólni fognak a harangok a Csonkatoronyban. A magában álló, de évszázadokat túlélt Csonkatorony Csopak jelképévé vált.
