Ónod várának története
A vár építése a Czudar család nevéhez köthető, akik a 14. század második felében húzták fel az erődítményt. Több zálogbirtokos kezében fordult meg 1516-ig, amikor is a Perényiek meg nem szerezték azt. Az addigra teljesen romossá vált várat a Perényiek nemcsak felújították, hanem bővítették is: előbb pinceszinttel rendelkező palotaszárnyat építettek, majd a törökök első ónodi fosztogatását követően a várat külső fallal vették körül, sarkaira kiugró, belsejükben kazamatákat rejtő óolasz bástyákat emeltek, sőt a mezőváros köré is húztak palánkfalat.
A vár hadászati jelentősége Eger 1596-os eleste után nőtt meg: 1602-ben az országgyűlés végvárnak minősítette és elrendelte felújítását, feladata a Sajó völgyének védelme lett. A török háborúk során Ónodot többször ostromolták meg, többször váltott gazdát, végül a 17. század utolsó évtizedében megsemmisült, s ezt követően már nem hozták helyre.
A magyar történelmi emlékezetbe Ónod az 1707-ben itt tartott, a Habsburg-ház trónfosztását kimondó országgyűléssel vonult be, ám ennek helyszíne már nem a romos vár volt, hanem a szomszédos Körömi-mező. A használható épületek a 18. században még gabonaraktárként üzemeltek, de a Sajó áradásai megsemmisítették őket, a megmaradt falak köveit pedig a helyiek használták fel saját építkezéseikre, amit csak a 19. század közepén tiltottak be. A vár állagának javulásáig egészen az 1985-ben kezdődött feltárási munkákig kellett várni.

- Az autóbusz váróteremtől jelzetlen utakon juthatunk el a várromhoz. Keleti irányban indulunk el a Rákóczi utcában. A főút néhány méter megtétele után derékszögben balra kanyarodik, mi azonban egyenesen megyünk tovább, a Vár utcát kezdjük el követni, mely elvezet minket Ónod váráig (500 m, szintemelkedés nélkül).
