A Szentesről Szarvas felé vezető út mentén, a szántóföldön áll a város egyetlen középkori műemléke. A középkorban virágzó Ecser falu első említése 1138-ból származik. A település a tatárjárás során elpusztult, később kun szállásként éledt újjá. Ma már csak a rom közelében lévő településrész, Belső-Ecser neve utal rá.
A jellegzetes román-kori templom a 13. század második feléből származik. A törökök 1566-ban a falut és templomát is felégették. A ma látható rom feltárására az 1960-as években került sor.
A rom a Körös-Maros Nemzeti Parkhoz tartozó Cserebökényi puszta mellett található.
