Die Bauherren der 1466 erstmals urkundlich erwähnten Kirche „zum heiligen Stephan Papst“ in St. Steben haben wohl einen der schönsten Plätze entlang der Gailtaler Alpen in 1005 Metern ober dem Meeresspiegel der Adria als Standort ausgewählt.

Der Bau mit seinem spätgotischen, 2-jochigen Chor und dem gedrungenen, 3-geschossigen barocken Turm ist auch nach über einem halben Jahrtausend noch jährlich Mittelpunkt zahlreicher Messfeiern und Ziel unzähliger Wanderer.
