A wonderful hike to the mountain church of St. Steben (1,004 m) in the middle of the steep mountain flank of the Gailtal Alps, with probably the most beautiful view of the Gailtal - an insider tip!

The starting point for this multi-faceted circular hike is the remote Görtschach-Förolach railroad station on the edge of the extensive reed foothills of Lake Presseggersee.

After just a few meters, a quiet feeder road leads us comfortably up the rural ridge of Wittenig. Meadows, fruit trees, wayside shrines, farms ... exude a traditional rural idyll. An airy, sublime walking experience. If you look closely, you will discover the mountain church of St. Steben in the steep mountain flank of the Gailtal Alps - our destination!

After the last farm, we follow the edge of the forest on natural paths. Then it's a brisk descent through mixed forest into the hidden Schinzengraben. At first, a quiet road leads us uphill past individual houses. Further up, a more ascending, wildly romantic path in the now secluded forest ditch is a delight. The babbling brook, rustic mixed forest ... time out for the soul!

The ditch ends on the hidden landscape terrace of the Siebenbrünner Weide, an ancient pasture landscape and a natural gem. The idyllic stream pond, the meandering stream, a species-rich fen ... A path allows us to regenerate briefly on the plateau. Finally, a steep forest path winds its way up through the mountain flank of the Gailtal Alps to the mountain church of St. Steben (1,004 m). Congratulations! 27 church towers in view, Lake Pressegg framed by reeds, the gentle hilly landscape in the valley ... a fantastic view. The Gailtal valley lies at our feet.

The descent first crosses the mountain flank on a forest path, then a steep forest path winds down through the mountain forest to the magnificent Siebenbrünner Weide. From there, a quiet road leads downhill through the rural village of Köstendorf and on across a vast, rural meadow plateau. The final highlight: we hike enjoyably over a gently sloping panoramic ridge towards the lake. A feeling of sublimity and bliss brings this insider tip tour to a worthy close.

    Author’s recommendation

The mountain church of St. Steben is a hidden gem of the Gailtal valley. According to tradition, it was originally supposed to be built in Förolacher Moos. However, a divine sign revealed the rocky outcrop in the steep mountain flank of the Gailtal Alps as the building site. The church quickly developed into a regional place of pilgrimage - also for those looking to get married. The sacristan's family, who lived up there, also performed a vital task: they rang the bell to sound the alarm if a fire broke out in the valley.
