Gäubodenmuseum Straubing

The Gäubodenmuseum, established in 1908 in the Fraunhoferstraße not far from the town square in an old town house, offers a comprehensive overview of the history of the town of Straubing and its surroundings, the Gäuboden. The house looks back on a long collection history. Its beginnings date back to 1845, when the "historical", i.e. outdated, stocks of the municipal arsenal were separated from the "modern, serviceable weapons and equipment".
With a collection of almost 175 years of history, the Gäubodenmuseum Straubing holds one of the largest collections of traditional artefacts in Eastern Bavaria. Today its stock is housed in two former patrician houses, which are located in the immediate vicinity of one of the most beautiful squares in Old Bavaria. The permanent exhibition gives an overview of the prehistoric settlement up to the more recent history of the city and its surroundings.
The highlight of the collection - apart from the rich finds from the Bavarian period - is the Roman treasure of Straubing discovered in autumn 1950. To this day it is the most important deposit of Roman parade armour parts in the area of the former "Imperium Romanum".
