Straubing and the Danube

Start at the town square in Straubing. Walk past the city tower towards the water tower and turn left at the traffic light down to the castle and the castle bridge. After the bridge, follow hiking trail 6. It goes through Gstütt into the Vogelau bird sanctuary. For the next few kilometers, you will be walking along the Danube dike. A great landscape and you are still almost in the city. There are many deer and birds to observe here, and you repeatedly get beautiful views of the Danube. Next, proceed to the next Danube bridge, which we pass under, and climb up a stone staircase on the other side. Now you are on the other side of the Danube and immediately turn left again. Steps lead to the next Danube dike, which we now follow. Via a small paved road, you reach Sossau and walk past the beautiful pilgrimage church (worth a visit). We leave Sossau along the sports field and arrive at the Danube weir. From here, follow the Danube panorama trail back to Straubing. A bicycle path takes you past the fairground and the stadium at Pulverturm—the home of the Straubing Tigers. Finally, there is a short uphill stretch and you reach the town square again. A city tour is recommended here. Highlights include the Gäuboden Museum with its Roman treasure, the city tower, the basilica, or you can simply sit in one of the many restaurants at the town square and watch the busy life.
