During this stop in Báta, the leaders of the Hungarian forces appointed two commanders-in-chief: Pál Tomori and György Szapolyai. These commanders departed ahead of the main army on 21 August, travelling via Dunaszekcső toward Mohács to prepare for the confrontation with the advancing Ottoman forces.
The plaque also records a personal moment in the king’s journey. Before continuing south, Louis II is said to have confessed and taken Holy Communion at Báta. Afterward, he travelled briefly to an estate associated with George and László of Szekcsőisziget before rejoining his army on the march to Mohács. The inscription reflects the tragic tone of the campaign, noting that the young king was prepared to sacrifice his life “for God, the homeland, and the West.”
The memorial also recalls events following the catastrophic defeat of the Hungarian army on 29 August 1526. In early September, the victorious Ottoman forces under Sultan Suleiman passed through the region on their march toward Buda.
The plaque was erected by the citizens of Báta on the 400th anniversary of the Battle of Mohács, commemorating both the royal army’s passage through the village and the historical events that followed.
