Manasija became the home of the renowned Resava School, a major centre for copying, translating, and illuminating manuscripts. Its scribes preserved numerous religious and literary texts during a turbulent historical period, and the monastery library reportedly contained more than 20,000 books. Although the monastery endured repeated Ottoman attacks and suffered extensive damage over the centuries, important frescoes survived within the church. These paintings are considered among the finest examples of late Byzantine art in the Balkans, despite the loss of many sections after the church roof was removed and the interior exposed to weather. Nearby archaeological remains include the ruins of the monastery refectory, once the largest medieval dining hall in Serbia, as well as the remains of a large medieval bread oven discovered during recent excavations. Today, Manasija is protected as a Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance and remains one of Serbia’s most celebrated historical and spiritual sites.
