Kaán Károly Lookout Tower
Hiking up to the lookout tower sitting at 454 m the panorama unfolds nearly for 360 degrees. Only János-hegy interrupts the view to the south. From the observation deck you can see the central and northern districts of Budapest, the range of Pilis and Visegrádi Mountains with Börzsöny Mountains in the background. To the west you can spot the sail-shaped Csergezán Pál lookout tower on the top of Nagy-Kopasz Hill. The view to the west is dominated by the Basin of Zsámbék.
The tower was built in 1988-1989. The oak structure on the stone base is supported by red pine beams. The pillars and the beams were carved in nearly Budakeszi and delivered to the top by helicopter. Károly Kaán, the eponym for the tower was a forest engineer and as a Deputy Minister of Agriculture he worked on plans to reforest the Great Plain to make up for the loss of forest area by the Treaty of Trianon. He is also renowned for making the Forest Act in 1935, which was, actually, the first act on environmental protection in Hungary.
