A Pilis keletre, Pilisszentkereszt fölé magasodó oldalán 180 évnél idősebb fákat is találhatunk a meredek, sziklás terepen. Korábban elzárt katonai terület volt a közelében, ezért az utak messzire elkerülték.
Az állami kezelésben lévő, fokozottan védett területen álló egyetlen, több mint 30 hektáros erdőrészlet része a Natura 2000 hálózatnak, és a Duna–Ipoly Nemzeti Park törzsterületének is. Nem folyik benne hagyományos faanyagtermelés. Alighanem a 2014-es jégtörés lehet az oka, hogy a lombsátorban hatalmas lékek nyíltak, ami ugyan szokatlan látvány, de hosszú távon hozzátesz az erdő eleve magas természetességéhez.

Érdekesség, hogy a hasonló nevű Pilis-oldal Erdőrezervátumot a nyugatra néző túloldalon hozták létre, melynek faállománya az Országos Erdőállomány Adattár szerint sok évtizeddel fiatalabb – legfeljebb 140 éves. Létezik ugyanakkor még egy apró erdőrészlet a hegyen, az Orosdy-kastély felett, már a fokozottan védett területen kívül, ahol 200 éves tölgyfák is előfordulnak; igaz, az állomány nagy része itt is jóval fiatalabb.

A Pilis hegység a budapestiek egyik legkedveltebb úti célja, nem csak a bakancsos turisták, de a sziklamászók körében is. A Pilis-tető a 756 méter magas csúccsal együtt 1997-ig elzárt, katonai terület (rakétabázis) volt, így turistaút sem vezetett fel rá; ezt a célt az utóbbi évtizedekben már lehetett pótolni, sőt a Boldog Özséb-kilátó 2014-es megnyitása óta a tájat madártávlatból is megcsodálhatjuk.
