A tó a hatvanas években folytatott tőzegbányászat következtében alakult ki. Medrét elsősorban csapadék és talajvíz töltötte fel, a későbbiekben néhány forrás is előtört, és biztosítja a vízutánpótlást.
A tőzegtermelés megszűnte után a horgászatot és a természetet szerető emberek a Lenin MGTSZ, illetve a Magyar Gyapjúfonó és Szövőgyár dolgozói 1970-ben megalakították a GYAPJÚFONÓ – TÁRNOK HORGÁSZ EGYESÜLETET.
Parking
A tó Tárnok üdülőtelepe mellett fekszik az M7 autópálya közvetlen közelében. Az M7 autópályán mindkét irányból a Tárnoki lehajtónál kell lehajtani, majd Sóskút irányába közlekedni. A sóskúti körforgalomnál az első kihajtón jobbra Tárnok irányába, majd az M7 –es alatt áthaladva kb. 100 m után tábla jelzi a lehajtást jobbra a tóhoz.
Érd felől a sóskúti úton kell haladni, majd az M7 autópálya előtt kb. 100 m-re, balra a tábla szerint, Sóskút felől a körforgalomból Érd felé kihajtva az autópálya alatt áthaladva mintegy 100 m után jobbra a tábla jelzése szerint.
