The appeal of the cozy main square around the pond with medieval buildings makes Malom-tó a place hard to leave behind.

The surrounding area has been inhabited for 7000 years and served as town center since the Middle Ages. The creek was dammed even by the Ancient Romans. The estimated date of constructing the mill is the 13th-14th century, however, its predecessor used to work here in the Árpád era, too. The neighboring pond used to have a mill also.

The name “Tapolca” comes from the Slavic “hot water” with reference to an underground spring below the town with a temperature of 18 degrees. That is why the pond never freezes in winter except one year when bauxite mining in Bakony reduced karst water level so much that the spring nearly ran dry. The town sits on the 4th largest cave system in the country.

Formerly, yards of the buildings around the pond used to reach the pond but by today restructuring the square has allowed to walk around and enjoy the unique ambience.
