Even just watching the water ornamented with water lilies make it a memorable experience to visit the famous thermal lake of Hévíz.

The lake with an area of 4.5 hectares is the largest thermal lake suitable for swimming. Its hot water has been known for ages, though curative properties had not been exploited until the surrounding swamp was drained by György Festetics at the end of the 18th century. The lake had become accessible and a bathhouse was built also. The first building to serve medical purposes was built in 1910. The same year the park was designed and water lilies as signature features of the lake were planted as well.

Hot and cold water is issued by springs nearly 40 meters underground and maintain the temperature of the lake at 34 degrees in summer and 24 degrees in winter. Flow rate is so high that residence time of lake water is just 3 days. The spring cave collects water from a vast karst area including Zala Hills, Keszthely Mountains and Bakony Mountains. When intensive mining operations started in Bakony in the mid-20th century flow rate of springs feeding the lake had dropped, however, has recovered by today.

Due to rich mineral content of lake water and peat medical treatments in the spa complex reduce rheumatic complaints.
