Among water lilies on the winter Hévíz creek
Special paddling on the never-freezing creek that carries the excess water from Lake Hévíz into the Zala river. Boarding the water in the steam cloud of the warm creek in the winter cold, and then setting off among water lilies and lotuses, is a unique experience – and we won’t be disappointed in continuing the quiet, peaceful route!
To protect aquatic plants and nesting birds here, the creek can only be navigated between early November and mid-March. Also in the interest of nature conservation, paddling requires a permit (note: also for individual tourists!), limited by time frame and number of people. There is only one landing and resting place in the middle of the route, without infrastructure, so food and drinks must be taken along.
General information:
- Recommended even for beginners
- Own boat needed or sign up for an organized program
- Landing possibilities:
- Fácános resting place with a rain shelter on the 6th km
Author’s recommendation
- Numerous paddling groups advertise organized routes on the Hévíz outflow, so it is worth signing up for one of these if you don't have your own boat.
- The warm water of the Hévíz creek should not mislead us when choosing our clothing: it is warm only for the first few kilometers, then gradually cools down.
- Bathing at the sluice is clearly forbidden contrary to all rumors, information, articles, and blog posts! This is the general rule within 200 m from the sluice.
- The exact paddling period must be checked every year on the website of the relevant Balaton Uplands National Park website .
- The daily amount of permits issued is 250, priced at 1000 HUF/person, also purchasable on the National Park's website.
-
When planning the route, inform yourself in advance about the parts of the Navigation Regulations relating to paddlers, especially about the mandatory equipment on touring boats, the wearing of life jackets, and the main rules of water traffic.

If you have a sports watch suitable for navigation, you can download the track using the above "GPX download" button, but if you bring a phone with you, you can also navigate by opening the route directly in the Nature Walker app .

- Wear appropriate clothing and safety equipment.
- Pay attention to the water traffic rules. You can learn about them, for example, on this page.
Roadbook
The spring flow that feeds Lake Hévíti with 24°C thermal water in winter is so high that the lake’s water is renewed every three days. The Hévíz outflow leads away the excess water and discharges it into the Zala river along an approximately 10 km long route, from where it flows directly into Lake Balaton. We can paddle down this creek in winter when we do not disturb the protected water birds nesting here, nor the special plants flourishing in summer.
We start our route at the boarding place below the sluice, paved with stone bricks. After departure, a 2 km straight section follows, but we will not get bored for a moment, as we watch the water lilies and lotuses introduced into Lake Hévíz at the end of the 20th century, see fish and underwater vegetation in the clear water, and enjoy that in the cold winter our boat finally heats from below instead of cooling. The current is visible and can be felt but is not strong at all.
At the end of the straight section (along which the Berki promenade and nature trail also run), there is a right angle turn, followed immediately by an old sluice acting now as a sort of constriction, through whose gate we gently glide along with the accelerated current. From here a wider, more natural, more wild section follows. We pass under the bridge of Úsztatómajor, then soon paddle through a tunnel-like passage under the bridge of road 75. After a few turns, another long straight section follows, but due to the dense, lush vegetation, the creek does not feel like a channel at all.
At the halfway point, another bridge appears, and then we arrive at the 6th km where there is a landing on the right bank under another bridge, and the Fácános resting place with a rain shelter awaits us. The landing site is just a trampled shoreline which can be slippery, so we should not rush, and if there are several of us, help each other.
Continuing, no more bridges appear, and the usual dense vegetation accompanies us for 4 km all the way to the landing point under road 76. There on the right side, there is also only a landing site trampled in the reeds and rushes along the embankment, without developed infrastructure. After landing, mobile toilets installed at the road cross are available. If you wish, you can cross the road and walk to the Kis-Balaton visitor center about 500 m away, which is open in winter on weekends.
Public transport
- This route is hard to reach by public transport.
- If you arrive for an organized route, get off the intercity bus at the Hévíz, Ady Endre street stop.
Get Timetable to destination
Directions
- We walk from the bus stop towards the lake on Ady Endre street, cross over the outflow, and turn right in the parking lot (1.2 km).
Parking
- The parking lot is located at the southern part of Lake Hévíz, spacious but paid (Hévíz Lake Parking). Since the embarkation point is a little further down, you can drive next to the parking on the left side to the camping, but beyond that, driving towards the sluice is forbidden, so next to the camping you can quickly unload your equipment and park the car in the paid parking lot.
