Zur Beteiligung an diesem Geschehen hatte man kräftig geworben, auch unter den festsitzenden DDR-Flüchtlingen in Budapest, die sich die Weiterreise in den Westen zu problemlos vorgestellt hatten. Zu Tausenden waren sie gekommen, und als das Tor geöffnet wurde, drängten fast 700 von ihnen hinüber auf die österreichische Seite, ohne auf nennenswerten Widerstand zu stoßen. In den Folgetagen wurde zwar die Bewachung der Grenzen verstärkt, aber drei Wochen später, am 11. September, wurden sie für DDR-Bürger ohne Einschränkung geöffnet. Neben einem mit Tafeln ausgeschilderten Grenzlehrpfad mit Wachturm erinnern hier eine Reihe von Kunstwerken in verschieden Ausdrucksformen an das Geschehen, darunter ein Brunnenhaus, die Freiheitsglocke und das Denkmal der geöffneten Türen.
