Weil diese Öffnung aber von der Öffentlichkeit kaum zur Kenntnis genommen wurde, durchtrennten am 27. Juni 1989 der damalige österreichische Außenminister Alois Mock und sein ungarischer Amtskollege Gyula Horn - nunmehr publikumswirksam - gemeinsam den Grenzzaun in der Nähe von Klingenbach bei Sopron. Aus diesem Anlass wurden die vorher schon entfernten Grenzanlagen wieder aufgebaut, damit der „Eiserne Vorhang“ medienwirksam von den beiden Außenministern durchtrennt werden konnte.
