In an open and bright valley lies Eußerthal. Surrounded by meadows, mountains, and rocks in the Palatinate Forest, about 7 km from Annweiler. Crystal-clear babbling brooks and pure forest air guarantee a high recreational value.
The origins of the village are linked to a monastery founded in 1148. The impressive Cistercian church of St. Bernhard, one of the most valuable architectural creations of the 13th century in the Palatinate, has been preserved in the center of the village. Monks from the Cistercian monastery acted as castle chaplains and guardians of the imperial regalia on the Trifels in the 12th and 13th centuries. Inside the church, the history can be vividly traced through display boards. In addition, great concerts take place in the church.
The historical monastery circular walk showcases the grandeur of the former monastery and informs about monastic life in the Middle Ages. On the monk's path, one follows the traces of the monks from the monastery church over Gräfenhausen and Annweiler up to the Trifels.
Eußerthal serves as an ideal starting point for many attractive hikes to prominent lookout points and hidden huts in the Palatinate Forest, such as the Böchinger Hut or the Siebeldinger Hut. Alternatively, one can follow the designated Pfälzer Weinsteig trail to Dernbach and Ramberg or to Gräfenhausen and Annweiler am Trifels. Those who wish to enjoy absolute peace can find it at one of the idyllic fishing ponds. Or at the trekking site near Beutelberg.
An ambitious and varied cuisine is offered by the "Klosterstübl" and the "Birkenthaler Hof." Particularly popular in Eußerthal are the freshly caught trout from one of the numerous ponds.
On the 3rd weekend in August, the village hosts the Schälebrichelkerwe. These so-called Schälebrichel were the leftover wood that remained after the bark of oak trees was stripped for dye production (tanning trade). As the trees were stripped while still quite young, there were hardly any truly strong trees around Eußerthal. Schälebrichel is therefore a term of derision for those who did not have a proper forest with strong trees.
