The circular hiking route 1 leads through the idyllic Birkental valley along a stream and several fish ponds. The path is mostly barrier-free and the eastern section is paved.
The circular hiking route 1 leads from the center of Eußerthal past the Birkenthaler Hof into the Birkental valley.
The starting point of the hike is the parking lot at the community center / fire station in the center of Eußerthal. There is also a bus stop for line 521 here. From the parking lot, we turn right onto the main street, then right again onto Breitbachstraße. We keep going right and walk out of the village to the hiking parking lot at Birkental. Here, we have to cross Taubensuhlstraße and follow the circular route straight into the Birkental valley. Past the Schweinswoog pond, the path winds along the Eußerbach stream to the north.
Over a narrow bridge, you reach a farm road, which leads after a few meters to the right into a crossroads. Here the path turns right on an asphalted path southwards back to the Birkenthaler Hof (place to eat and rest). Along Haingeraidestraße, we return to the village center to the community center, our starting point of the hike.
UFFBASSE! - Campaign for considerate coexistence in nature
- Always behave in a forward-looking, friendly, and considerate way towards everyone you meet on the way.
- Take care of nature, do not destroy plants, and always stay on the paths. Try to avoid excessive noise and leave the forest before dusk.
- Think of a trash bag for the way and take your waste back home.
- Please keep your dog on a leash at all times. Other visitors and animals will thank you.
- Observe all trail closures for your own safety, even on weekends.
- Park only in designated parking spaces. Leave space for emergency vehicles and agricultural machinery.
- Give priority to agricultural and forestry traffic.

Safety information
General information:
Especially in autumn, be aware that fallen leaves on the ground can conceal unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. After thunderstorms or heavy rain, trees may still fall or branches drop afterwards. Nature paths may have muddy and slippery sections under adverse weather conditions. Not all rocks or ravines are secured with ropes or railings. Surefootedness is required in places. You should expect such path impairments when hiking. If you find certain sections impassable, you should avoid them.
NOTE:
We strive to announce all closures caused by forest work or hunting societies on this platform. However, there are situations where hiking trails are closed and we might not have been informed. If you unexpectedly encounter a trail closure or detour, please observe the information for your own safety.

Roadbook
The circular hiking route 1 leads from the center of Eußerthal past the Birkenthaler Hof into the Birkenthal valley.
Here the path turns right again southwards back to the Birkenthaler Hof (place to eat and rest). On the way, we pass the Eußerthal ecosystem research facility of the University of Kaiserslautern-Landau and fish ponds.
Along Haingeraidestraße, we return to the village center to the community center, our starting point of the hike.
If you are with a stroller, you should not use the narrow path to the right at the crossroads at the end of the valley, but go straight ahead a few meters further. Then you meet the same farm road that can also be reached via the bridge. Here turn right to the crossroads, then continue as described above.
Looking for a barrier-free path? Then park at the hiking parking lot opposite the Birkenthaler Hof and take the paved path into the Birkental valley. However, then you cannot take a circular route but must return the same way.
At the end of the valley, a detour to the Böchinger Hut is also possible. Just follow the red dot, mostly flat path. Open on Sundays.

Equipment
For our hikes, we recommend the following equipment as standard:
- Sturdy footwear
- Clothing adapted to the weather
- Sun and rain protection
- Sufficient supply of food and drinks, as there are not always places to eat or shop everywhere or they might be closed.
- Even if the paths are very well marked throughout, it is advisable for safety reasons to always carry a suitable hiking map, so that you can quickly find a safe area, for example in case of a storm or emergency.
